When you use a sprayer the paint is delivered from from the sprayer to the substrate by atomizing the paint in a mist spray. The paint is delivered to the substrate and air particles are embedded into the paint. If you don't back roll or brush when the paint dries, it will trap the air particles in the paint.

When the temperatures fluctuates the air particles will expand and contract. In a few seasons the paint will then start to crack, allowing moisture to penetrate and crack the paint even more. In a short period of time the entire paint job will be compromised. Typically within 2-3 years depending on where the house is located.

When you back roll and brush you force the air particles out of the paint while helping to push the paint into the substrate for deeper penetration which results in longer lasting protection. Adding a second coat in the same manner will increase protection another 3-4 years.
